News Update (Nov 2009)

Prepared by Jim Bence, Co-Director

Miscellaneous – On 9/27 some of us enjoyed the fisheries we research, taking a charter fishing trip out of Oscoda (Lake Huron). The charter run by Calypso Sportfishing Charters, and captained by Gene Kirvan included Travis Brenden, Brian Irwin, Kyle Molton, and Iyob Tsehaye. They saw firsthand the increasingly diverse recreational fishery on Lake Huron, catching three native species (lake trout, walleye, and lake whitefish) and no salmon. In a different type of fishing, Aaron Berger reported taking trips as part of Ontario's annual partnership fish community survey on a Lake Erie commercial fishing vessel during 4-10 foot (normal L. Erie) seas (9/18/09-9/20/09), and Ohio's annual Lake Erie fish community survey (2-4 ft seas, 10/20/09-10/21/09), and continuing to interact with the Lake Erie walleye task group. QFC graduate student and Ohio DNR biologist Chris Vandergoot continued to participate in Ohio’s survey as part of his day job, but for him I guess that is not news! Brian Irwin continued to interact with other FW faculty and a variety of external agencies to explore the possibilities of initiating a collaborative research effort to develop and apply structured decision-making approaches to management of double-crested cormorants. Jim Bence participated in the CSTAT Advisory Board meeting, CSTAT being the statistical consulting and education group who are our neighbors in Giltner Hall. Jim also served on an NSF Review Panel in Arlington VA.

Congratulations – Marty Williams heard that the B.A.S.S. and Costa Del Mar conservation scholarship he received last fall as an undergraduate would be extended for two more years during his graduate program.

Courses offerings and instruction – Check out the maximum likelihood and introduction to R courses linked to the QFC web site and check for new offerings as we have some other courses under development.

Courses/programs attended – Aaron Berger reports attending the CONNECT workshop offered by the Canadian Consulate Generals office to learn about funding opportunities for research conducted within or in conjunction with Canada (10/8/09), and a Spatial Analysis workshop offered by the Center for Statistical Training and Computing at MSU (10/23/09).

Presentations and meetings – Jim Bence and Kyle Molton attended the 1836 Treaty Waters Modeling Subcommittee meeting and Jim presented on implications of QFC research to MSC assessments. Mike Jones and Matt Catalano attended an AYK-SSI Panel Forum on Escapement Goals, Girdwood, AK (10/27/09-10/28/09). Mike co-chaired the meeting and gave a presentation introducing decision analysis and management strategy evaluation. Travis Brenden attended the CLC meeting and presented the results of our simulation-based evaluation of salmon stocking options for Lake Huron and Ontario, based on a completion report and draft manuscript intended for Ecological Modelling.

New Projects and Proposals – Aaron Berger, Matt Catalano, and Brian Langseth proposed a symposium: “Quantitative models to inform management of natural resources” for the 2010 International Association for Great Lakes Research meeting in Toronto, Ontario. Jim Bence and Travis Brenden heard positive news on their proposal to the GLFC Science Transfer Program for providing stock assessment instruction to agency scientists.

Publications – Since April 2009, seventeen newly published or in press publications have been co-authored by QFC staff. In addition, QFC staff have submitted or resubmitted eight manuscripts to be considered for publication during this period. (a list of published or in press publications can be seen in previous newsletters at http://qfc.fw.msu.edu/news_Oct02.asp).
